I was recently invited to a fashion exhibition for two local fashion designers at the National Gallery art museum. The inspiration behind the fashion pieces were paintings, sculptures, and photography. Here are my favorite pieces designed by Jawara and Isy B.
The first 3 pieces represent slavery in the islands are made out of leather. The ensembles in the second and fourth photos are inspired by paintings painted by local artists on the island. The white dress in the second photo is inspired by a winding sculpture resembling a conch shell, sculpted by a local artist as well.
The last two dresses are inspired by Caymanian Culture. The brown dress is made out of a potato sack, embellished with pearls and cinched in with blue fabric. The last 2 dresses (in the last photo) are inspired by local thatch work made in the islands’ earlier days. I couldn’t get a photo of the back, but there is beautiful thatch detailing.
